Hell / Gehenna / Hades
Or, Idioms and Word Pictures Surrounding Judgment

"Gehenna was, therefore, in the mind of Jesus, a gloomy, filthy valley, full of fire."

Geneva Marginal Notes
Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be {i} in danger {k} of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the {l} council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of {m} hell {n} fire.

(m) Whereas we read here "hell", it is in the text itself "Gehenna", which is one Hebrew word made out of two, and is as if to say "as the Valley of Hinnom", which the Hebrews called Topheth: it was a place where the Israelites cruelly sacrificed their children to false gods, whereupon it was taken for a place appointed to torment the reprobates in # Jer 7:31.

John Smith
"The mode of burying in the Jewish sepulchers, or ‘sides of the pit,’ and their Hades, or state of the dead, supplied many images of the same kind. See observations on Isaiah xiv., and Ezekiel 26:20."

Ernest Renan
"At this judgment men will be divided into two classes according to their deeds. The angels will be the executors of the sentences. The elect will enter into delightful mansions, which have been prepared for them from the foundation of the world; there they will be seated, clothed with light, at a feast presided over by Abraham, the patriarchs and the prophets. They will be the smaller number. The rest will depart into Gehenna. Gehenna was the western valley of Jerusalem. There the worship of fire had been practiced at various times, and the place had become a kind of sewer. Gehenna was, therefore, in the mind of Jesus, a gloomy, filthy valley, full of fire. Those excluded from the kingdom will there be burnt and eaten by the never-dying worm, in company with Satan and his rebel angels. There, there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. The kingdom of heaven will be as a closed room, lighted from within, in the midst of a world of darkness and torments." (
Life of Jesus)

In Matt 22:5
We meet with three ideas to be concerned with.
The phrases of in danger of (1)the judgement.
In danger of (2) the council.
In danger of (3) gehenna... which unfortunately was translated hell fire.
This was all said to characterize the need that righteousness at that time period was to exceed the scripes and Pharisees. See verse 20
Considering the Jewish court system at that time the supreme danger at that time would be[a]dishonorable death being thrown into gehenna - as if one was a common criminal.
The chapter-discourse is a long one and the one verse of Matt 22:5 -where gehenna should have been used - and not hell fire - was the ultimate end of disobedient hearts of most of the scribes and Pharisees at the end of the Roman Was in 70ad.
