Plain Truth Ministries - What Our Readers Say

Revelation Revolution

I recently read Revelation Revolution. As one who admires your stand on Scripture and opposition to legalistic devices, I was quite anxious to get your take on Revelation. I was glad to see your discernment towards the dispensationalists' wrong teaching. I was indoctrinated into pre-millennialism as a babe in Christ. But five years ago I was challenged by an eighty-year-old skeptic regarding the seeming failure of Jesus to return in the generation he promised. My discovery propelled me to become a full preterist. I believe that ALL end-times systems try to be Christ-centric, but only preterism is true to the biblical testimony of Jesus and the the apostles.

When we understand that the N.T. is the fulfillment of the promises in the O.T. we can accurately determine the meaning of the text. We cannot over emphasize the need to view the passages from the viewpoint of those who originally received it. It can't mean something different to us.

You seem to posit a spiritual kingdom in our day, but not the New Jerusalem. The nature of Christ's return and the nature of the New Jerusalem are pictures of being in Christ. They are not future, but part and parcel of the fullness of the new age brought in at the judgment/return in A.D.70. All of the prophecies given to Israel point to this very event as their restoration and hope. Revelation will never be understood apart from Israel's Old (temporal) and New (spiritual and eternal) covenants, and as the vindication and victory of our King, fulfilled in the exact promised time of that 1st century generation.

I was disappointed in your treatment of the chronology issue, even citing 2 Peter 3, as proof that God looks at time differently than man, even when communicating with man. God can tell time, and if he puts timing statements in his Word, it is because it expects us to understand His meaning.

I get the idea that Christ is absolutely more important than any secondary idea, but to downplay the importance of correct eschatology is unhelpful and leads to a greater confusion.  The church needs to proclaim the victory we have in Christ, and quit waiting for something that happened 1936 years ago! Thanks for all your correct Bible teaching! -- Email

• Thanks for your kind comments and for your critique. I am not ready to embrace any one of the four accepted hermeneutical eschatological approaches as completely satisfying to all of the issues and questions surrounding Bible prophecy. I do not deny that there is material in Revelation -- indeed in other biblical prophetic writings (non-apocalyptic) -- that seem to be written to "our time" (that is, to the human time as experienced by the reader in any era). However, it seems to me that the most fundamental issue in Revelation is not human time, days, seasons, years, generations, eras or epochs. I make this point in my book, but perhaps not convincingly for you.

I am a lot closer to a preterist perspective than I was decades ago, of that there is no doubt. But I still see many demerits in human attempts to parse Jesus and his kingdom into our measurements of time -- whenever we calculate that time to have been or to occur in some future generation. Having said that, I am weary and leery of assuming that I now have the last word on prophetic teachings.

Reading Revelation is like driving a motorcycle. If you forget to respect the power that is present, you may find yourself unceremoniously dumped on the asphalt. After all, there was a time when I was under the delusion that I had Revelation "all figured out." I remain open, and trust that the Lord, in his grace and mercy will engage me and lead me to the places he wants me to go.

Marvelous work
Please would you let me know where I can send a donation to Plain Truth Ministries and the best way to go about it. I am so appreciative of their marvelous work in reaching out to Christ's followers and bringing them back to him in such a beautiful and encouraging way. -- California

An exciting journey of learning
Thanks so much for the books that you wrote, Bad News Religion and Revelation Revolution. This is an exciting journey of learning (and a lot of unlearning) that I have embarked on. My prayers are with all of you -- and for all those who are in "captivity" and their journey to freedom in Christ. -- Georgia

It's time YOU understood the Bible's most misunderstood book!

Revelation Revolution -- the Overlooked Message of the Apocalypse -- is a revolution in the way that many have been trained and taught to think about biblical prophecy. Revelation Revolution is a grace-based, Christ-centered exploration of the biblical book of Revelation. Thousands of people are beginning to understand what the Bible's most misunderstood book really means. Here's one reader's comment:

I have learned so much from your book! I have studied the Bible most of my 65 years from my childhood, and never heard the words "preterist, futurism, eschatology." With your list of definitions in the front of the book to flip back to, reading is easy as the words became more and more familiar.

Revelation Revolution is so enlightening -- and I also want to thank Greg for the word "romance" -- in connection with our heart toward Jesus, our "first love". The word "romance" describes the love and awe I feel after all these years -- intensifying my relationship with a loving God and Savior. After all these years, when I read the scriptures, while the words are very familiar, the meaning is altogether fresh and new. He is saying "I love you" all over again.

Thank you again for this wonderful book,
